I work first and foremost here with upper school students who’re passionate about writing and the imagination. There seems little point trying to convince forty bored teenagers on a Friday afternoon that writing is what’s missing from their lives (I have tried, many times). So, with groups of half a dozen to a dozen, I prefer to look at poetry and prose, consider the use of language, characterisation, the establishing of mood, dialogue, and so on and so forth, in real detail. Writing think tanks that can last perhaps for a morning or an afternoon, and which (hypothetically) can incorporate writing time and evaluation.

Fees

All my writing events north of the border – both for adults and youngsters alike – either are supported directly by Live Literature Scotland or else carried out under the auspices of the scheme. South of the border it’s Poetry Society rates that apply. Writer in Residence periods are set up on an individual basis with schools, as are events conducted abroad.
