Writer in Residence appointments

These longer stays in schools (both primary and secondary) really grew out of my own frustration at visiting a school for a few hours and being gone again so quickly. I was appointed Writer in Residence first at Glenalmond College in Perthshire; this meant that I worked with classes and clusters of pupils over several sessions. I also did an event for staff (a talk on creativity) and gave an evening reading in the library. Effectively I became part of the English Department for the duration of the week. Such residencies have taken place subsequently at Haileybury, Bradfield and Harrow Colleges; a similar week was set up and run at the International School of Lausanne in Switzerland. Often anthologies of new writing are produced to celebrate the week’s achievements.

Fees

All my writing events north of the border – both for adults and youngsters alike – either are supported directly by Live Literature Scotland or else carried out under the auspices of the scheme. South of the border it’s Poetry Society rates that apply. Writer in Residence periods are set up on an individual basis with schools, as are events conducted abroad.
